Natural Capital

Where ecology strengthens economy

Healthy nature currently has no financial value in our economy—which is strange, considering it is indispensable for both humanity and business. Our current agricultural and food systems are hitting their limits. Sustainable farmers are proving there is a better way: alongside food, they provide ecosystem services like healthy soil, biodiversity, and water retention. Yet, they receive almost no reward for these contributions.

It is time for a shift: from viewing nature as a cost to treating nature as an investment. By recognizing this value, we create a new economic reality where farmers are fairly compensated for both the food they produce and the natural value they protect.

We are exploring this through a dedicated pilot. We are demonstrating that it is possible to:

  • Smartly measure ecosystem services.
  • Formalize these services in legal contracts.
  • Value them as assets on the balance sheet.
  • Connect farmers directly with forward-thinking investors.

7 Checkmarks for Organic
Organic farming ticks 7 key boxes. Just consider the facts: it is better for biodiversity, soil health, water quality, the climate, human health, animal welfare, and the resilience of agriculture against extreme weather. Furthermore, the report (link: https://grondbeginsel.nl/ text: “The Hidden Bill” )shows that if the protein transition continues, the Netherlands will be able to produce more than enough calories to feed ourselves, and even export food, using 100% organic farming.
